The 36 mile, 10,000 foot elevation, "Run to The Sun" Ultra Marathon is one of Maui's legendary and toughest events. Read all about it in Sheri Levin McNerthney's 2004 description.

From the beginning runner or walker to the elite competitor, VIRR addresses the varied talents and interests of its members in a year round program. They are available to assist other organizations with additional races during the year by providing their expertise and support.

In 1990, VIRR past president, Mike Rocco, created the Youth Awards program as a way to recognize the outstanding young runners of Maui County. In addition to trophies, plaques and medals, a scholarship fund was created which, to this day, continues to provide financial assistance to many young runners in the community. With this assistance many young athletes are able to travel to mainland clinics and meets to train and compete with athletes they normally would not have the opportunity to.

In 1996, VIRR teamed up with the Maui County Parks and Recreation Department to create a year-round youth age group running program. This program continues to grow in popularity with nearly 200 young members. VIRR sponsors many of these children by paying their entry fees in the annual Front Street Mile, held in conjunction with the Maui Marathon, making it one of the most popular and family-friendly community events.

All proceeds from races, sponsorship, merchandise sales and membership fees are used to support and develop these programs and high quality events VIRR produces during the year. Being the vistor destination Maui is, VIRR welcomes new members from all over the world.
