The Maui Marathon Raises Money for Local and National Charities

Over $280,000 raised in the last 10 years

Raising funds for charitable organizations and being a part of the community is something we firmly believe in. Without community support, the Maui Marathon, Maui Half Marathon, Maui Tacos 5k and the Front Street Mile would not be possible.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America, Inc. is a national non-profit health agency dedicated to seeking the cause and cure for leukemia, multiple myeloma, Hodgkins disease, and the lymphomas, while improving the lives of patients and their families.

The Society provides funding for research, public and professional education, patient aid and community service programs. The 2006 Maui Marathon had 250 participants from the society, and raised over $1.3 million from the Maui Marathon and Half Marathon alone!

2007 Sponsors

The 2007 Maui Marathon cannot happen without our committed sponsors. Many of our sponsors have been with us for over ten years and we would like to applaud them for their support.

Mark Ellman the founder of Maui Tacos, has sponsored the 5K for the last seven years. He has even completed the 5K himself the last two years. Mark is very community oriented and is right behind everything the Maui Marathon events stand for.

Maui Tacos Story
Internationally acclaimed Hawaiian chef and restaurateur, Mark Ellman, first conceived Maui Tacos from the lanai of his beachfront home in Maui. With the persistent crash of waves pounding the beachfront shore, he sipped a glass of mango iced tea, contemplated life, death and the surfers waiting for the next great wave, and the delicious Mexican food he grew up with in Southern California and longed for in his new home in Hawaii.

As the sun set on the Pacific, Chef Ellman knew what he wanted to do. He went to work and in 1993 he opened the first MAUI TACOS restaurant, in Napili, Maui. "I set out to create a restaurant fusing traditional Mexican fare with the exotic flavors from the Hawaiian Islands". The successful result was MAUI TACOS.

Jay Satenstein - A Maui Legend

He calls the Maui Marathon his Favorite
jay

Running has not always been a passion for 60-year-old Jay Satenstein, but once the Smithtown, NY-Kihei, HI resident took up the sport in 1979, it became a way of life.

Satenstein believes that running is not only a great source of exercise, but is also a tool to help him clear his mind before he goes off to work in the morning. "My running partner is in the heating and air conditioning business and I am in the jewelry business," Satenstein said. "We don't know anything about each other's business but while running, we can vent all our stress from work."

In fact, it is the camaraderie between runners that Satenstein said he enjoys most. "The people you meet through running is what excites me." He believes it is often the common thread for people of different types of careers and backgrounds, as he found out while running with groups like the River Road Rats, the Northport Running Club, Bohemia Track Club and Valley Isle Road Runners in Maui.

"I'm one of the unusual ones, I'm a talker," said Satenstein who finished last month's Boston Marathon in 3:47:31, placing 79th in his age group.

While he enjoys all marathons, he calls the Maui Marathon his favorite. "How can you beat the atmosphere and the weather in Hawaii?"
