Seventh Annual Maui Tacos 5K To Be Held Saturday September 20, 2003

Maui's largest 5K, the Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk, will be held on
Saturday, September 20, 2003 as part of Maui Marathon race week activities.
The 5K begins at 8am at Whalers Village in Kaanapali and ends with an
awards ceremony including chilled fruit, pastries and refreshments for all participants at
9am on Center Stage in Whalers Village.
The entry fee is $20 if postmarked before September 10, 2003 and
$25 thereafter. Applications are available now at all Maui Tacos locations,
Footlocker in Kahului and Lahaina, Lady Footlocker, Customer Service Desk
at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, Sports Authority, Athlete HI Magazine, the
Maui Marathon website (www.mauimarathon.com), and by calling (808)
871-6441. Entries will also be accepted at the Maui Marathon Sports and
Fitness Expo on Friday, September 19 from 1-8pm at The Westin Maui. There
will be no race day entry permitted.
The Maui Tacos 5K course begins at Whalers Village then heads south
out of Kaanapali Resort onto Honoapiilani Highway to the entrance of
Wahikuli Park where it makes a hairpin turn and heads north back through
West Maui parks toward the resort. Returning to Kaanapali, the race
finishes in front of Whalers Village.
Awards will be given to first, second and third overall finishers
and three deep in the following age group divisions: 5 and under, 6-11,
12-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+.
Last year's Maui Tacos 5K had a total of 574 entries, just short of the 2001
record-breaking field of 639.Ryan Wilson of Santa Monica, California was
the first to cross the finish line with a time of :15:34 and Kira Jorgensen
of Seabrook, Texas was the first female finisher in :18:41.
Sponsored in part by Whalers Village, the race is named for Maui
Tacos, a fast food franchise founded by internationally known chef and
restauranteur, Mark Ellman in 1993. Today Maui Tacos has seven outlets in
Hawaii and seven on the mainland. Famous for its "Maui-Mex" cuisine, Maui
Tacos fuses traditional Mexican fare with exotic flavors from the islands.
The 33rd annual Maui Marathon will be held on Sunday, September 21,
2003. Participants from around the globe race from Kahului to Kaanapali
benefitting several Maui youth-oriented charities. Since 1995, the Maui
Marathon has raised more than $175,000 for Maui nonprofits.
